Windrose Mod Manager

A hosted-server user already had a working mod runtime, but the manager blocked mods that depended on it. I adapted the manager to respect that installation and published setup guidance.

The unchecked UE4SS is managed by host/provider setting in Windrose, with help explaining that the existing runtime is retained.
Actual v0.8.1 hosted-profile editor detail. This option lets the manager respect an existing provider-managed runtime. It is shown unchecked; this capture does not show an upload or a completed server setup.

The problem

A user reported that their hosting provider had helped install a working experimental UE4SS runtime. Replacing it with the manager's expected package would break their setup, yet the manager did not recognise it when checking dependent mods.

My contribution

I used the support report to revise the dependency assumption, define an external-runtime option and publish it in v0.7.0 with setup instructions. I use AI coding tools for much of the Python implementation and review the workflow, release scope and guidance for the person using it.

  • Keep the working host runtime
  • Mark it host-managed
  • Install dependent mods

Implementation choices

Respect an existing installation

A hosted profile can mark UE4SS as managed by the host or provider. The manager then recognises that external runtime for dependency checks, allowing dependent mods without requiring a replacement runtime.

Make the choice explicit

The hosted-profile editor includes the option “UE4SS is managed by host/provider”. The upload review identifies the external setup, and the release guidance tells users to keep the provider-installed runtime that works for them.

Keep the support outcome specific

The public thread records the v0.7.0 instructions and the user's later appreciation of the change. Their follow-up also raised settings and interface questions, which remained separate from the runtime dependency problem.

Result

The released option addressed the manager's assumption about who supplied UE4SS. The support discussion connects a real environment, a product change and subsequent user feedback, with source regression coverage for the external-runtime state.

Availability and scope

This change respects a runtime that the host already made work. It does not repair upstream UE4SS or establish compatibility with every provider. The Nexus release describes current installation and hosted-upload limits.
