Released / Baldur's Gate 3 companion control

UTAC

UTAC lets players give companions combat roles and target orders while the game's native AI chooses their actions.

The problem

Players who let companions act on their own still need to guide their tactics. Roles and target orders must work with the game's own AI and resources, while control moves between the player and the companion AI.

My contribution

I set the tactical behaviour and configuration requirements, review logs and integration issues, and maintain player documentation and releases. I use AI coding tools extensively for implementation and repair work, then review the changes against player-facing behaviour and the engine's integration requirements.

Implementation choices

Shape native choices

Combat roles change preferences for melee, ranged, support and spell-oriented characters. The game's native AI chooses from the character's available actions; assigning a role does not guarantee a particular opener or rotation.

Keep player direction available

Focus Target and Ignore Target orders let players guide priorities. Script Extender handles control and state, while BG3MCM provides policy settings. In co-op, the host's settings govern the configuration.

Check the actual integration path

Current control-repair work traced an Osiris adapter mismatch that older success-returning mocks missed. Regression coverage now exercises the production adapter route. Those offline checks remain separate from gameplay and final-package qualification.

Result

UTAC has a public Nexus release and source repository. Players can assign roles and target orders, while current development continues to investigate control restoration, support actions and engine-specific edge cases.

Availability and scope

This project uses native game combat AI. The Nexus release and current development differ, and newer repair or summon-controller work should not be read as fully qualified public functionality. The release documentation describes compatibility and known behaviour limits.

Project notes reviewed October 7, 2026. Development status is separate from Nexus reception updates.
